Kate Boswell
Kate's work is a fresh and contemporary artistic interpretation of the NZ landscape. Using the watercolour medium, but emphasising strong contrasts of light, Kate’s paintings depict familiar natural features, in a unique and interesting way.
Boswell’s watercolour landscape series began when she moved to Wanaka in January 2020. Kate says “I’ve always been drawn to landscape as an artistic subject matter, and having Lake Wanaka and the surrounding mountains right on my doorstep means I am never short of inspiration for my paintings. I look out at Treble Cone and Black Peak from my studio window everyday!”
After graduation Kate worked for over 10 years as a graphic designer. She worked for a children's book publisher while living in London for 3 years and then worked as a Textile Designer, for Bendon and then Postie, on her return to NZ.
As Boswell says “working as a Textile Designer required a lot of drawing and image making - hand drawn art combined with computer illustration - but it wasn't until moving to Wanaka that I began using watercolour paints. The medium really clicked for me, and in combination with my love of the natural landscapes, it was kind of a natural evolution to begin landscape painting and I've been working as a full time artist ever since."
Kate's work has been very popular since she began exhibiting here in Wanaka, particularly because she takes the time to accurately depict the unique features of our spectacular mountains that we all love so much.
