Alex Hodge

Inspired by Simon Berger, emerging artist Alex Hodge crafts intricate, fractured-glass artworks using only a hammer and chisel. Each image is created in reverse and revealed when the glass is turned over. His shimmering, diamond-like surfaces capture both fragility and strength. Winner of the People’s Choice Award at the Cleveland and Otago Art Society Awards 2025.

Alex Hodge

Alex Hodge is an emerging Dunedin-based artist inspired by renowned glass sculptor Simon Berger. In his debut year on the art scene, Alex made an immediate impact, winning the People’s Choice Award at both the Cleveland National Art Awards 2025 and the Otago Art Society Awards 2025.

Working with a single sheet of specialised glass, Alex creates intricate, fractured glass artworks using only a hammer and chisel. Each piece is meticulously crafted in reverse; the final image is revealed only once the glass is turned over. Through hundreds of carefully controlled strikes, he transforms fragile material into compelling imagery, where the cracks themselves form the subject.

In the right light, the shattered surfaces sparkle like diamonds, giving every work a unique depth and luminosity that traditional media cannot replicate. With no undo button and no eraser, each strike is permanent; mistakes must be embraced or the process begun anew. This delicate balance of precision and unpredictability defines Alex’s distinctive artistic voice, bringing his subjects to life through light, tension, and transformation.

The works are comprised of specialised glass with a custom powder-coated black steel frame and wall mounting system.
